Dieter has always made excellent double tops, and you have heard them on recordings I have noted before such as Stephan Schmidt’s recording of the Bach Lute Works played on a 10 string Cedar double top built by Dieter, one of my favorite recordings.
Recently however Dieter undertook the effort, as fine builders often do, to take his already wonderful guitars to a new level. He carefully studied 5 of his own best guitars which included 2 Dammann’s and a Friederich. He studied every aspect, the weight of the guitar, bracing, the resonance frequencies of the neck, body and back and much more. He then carefully applied this information using his years of skill in double top building to create what he feels are his best guitars yet, and which he feels contain the ‘essence’ of these fine guitars.
He also added a lovely Dammann inspired rosette, and an attractive Ramirez inspired headstock shape.
I have been waiting for this to arrive, and was really blown away by the quantum leap up, in what was already a very fine double top. It is ’next level’ to be sure. Super light and highly responsive with volume and projection to spare, it is a top level double top in all respects. Add to those qualities the “essence” Dieter speaks of, which might be described as if you mated a Dammann with a Friederich, well the offspring would be this new model from Dieter.
