For the past 30 years I have been honored as most of you know, to be the exclusive world wide representative for Jose and Liam Romanillos. This has provided me with the opportunity to hear and play many many guitars from both, but until recently I was never able to answer the question “ What would a brand new Jose guitar sound like compared to a brand new Liam guitar?” And then I was tasked by Jose’s wife, Marian, to find homes for the ‘final 4’ Jose guitars which she had kept in her home virtually unplayed since Jose passed. They were effectively ’new’ Jose guitars. I had one of them arrive at the same time that a new Liam arrived and finally I was able to do the comparison I was so interested in.
Being built in the same way, and using the same old aged woods, it was not too surprising that they sounded very very similar. I have also had the chance to play several of the new Liams I placed with clients over the year after they had been played in, and of course have played many well opened up Jose guitars. Again, in general very very similar.
So my impression is that buying a new Liam is much the same as buying ( when one could ) a new Jose, and also that once played in they sound also very similar. This is a wonderful continuation of the Romanillos legend.
This guitar is a classic example of this, no doubt one of the more beautiful guitars on the planet, and with one of the most beautiful and iconic Rosettes, the old aged woods are wonderful and the tone has that magic that we all look for in a Romanillos, that makes you feel as if you are playing in Chartres Cathedral. I love the look, and sound, of Liam’s Satinwood bridges. Being more dense than Rosewood, Liam feels, and I agree, that they add to the sustain and beauty of the notes.
This guitar is brand new, started in 2024 and completed in 2025 and is available now, without the usual 15-20 year wait! Of note is that I will likely not have another new Liam available until around 2027 or 2028.
If you have always dreamed of owning and playing a Romanillos, this is your chance. My favorite fan braced spruce guitars in the world.
