2006 Jose Romanillos “Marian”
I am honored that the Romanillos family selected me to represent this very fine and historical instrument. “Marian”, completed in 2006, is the last Cypress Jose Romanillos ever made. This stunningly beautiful guitar is essentially ’new’ since it has never been sold and is in superb condition. The guitar has a lovely Spruce top of very old well aged Romanillos Spruce, and old aged Cypress back and sides. Perhaps knowing this may be the last Cypress guitar he ever built, Jose lovingly dedicated this guitar to his wife “Marian” and inscribed her name on the label, as well as a touching inscription underneath the soundboard.
The back and sides are French Polished in Shellac in the usual fashion, while the top has a beautiful nearly ‘raw’ wood appearance which I find quite striking. Liam explained that Jose used a polish of ‘egg whites’ to achieve this which leaves the top looking more natural, and completely uninhibited by any finish applications. A gorgeous combination.
The guitar has the characteristic Romanillos sound that is so beloved by us all, focused rich basses, and clear singing trebles, a romantic voice, yet with more power than many Romanillos I have played, maybe there is some secret to the egg shell finish on the top.
This guitar was also played by Antigoni Goni when she made a recording of the last 4 Romanillos ever made, a beautiful work of art and music, here is the link in case you would like to purchase a copy of this special recording: https://www.medio-siglo.com/shop
Perhaps one of the most special Jose Romanillos guitars in the world…..
