Top level short scale guitars are difficult to come by. For this reason about once a year I invite one of the world class builders that I am fortunate enough to work with to build a short scale guitar so that those clients seeking a fine short scale guitar have a great option to consider. Most recently Robert Ruck, Paulino Bernabe and Jim Redgate honored me with short scale versions of their guitars. This year, after David Russell bought a fine Byers lattice braced guitar I thought I would ask Greg if he would build the short scale offering for 2010. Greg built an exquisite short scale guitar, Rosewood back and sides, fine all wood lattice braced Spruce top, twelve hole tie block, his much loved elevated fingerboard, French Polished in shellac, position markers on 7/12/17,20th half fret,and then installed a nice set of Rodgers tuners! The result? Sublime. Focused and powerful yet woody and warm with ample clarity, a beautiful sounding Spruce guitar that has everything: power, beauty, focus, warmth and supreme ease of play for those with smaller hands. Greg offers the opinion that if you are considering a short scale guitar then you should consider 630mm at least. He feels that 640mm does not provide quite enough difference from the standard 650mm scale. He advises players with smaller hands to put a capo on the first fret of a 650mm guitar. This effectively reduces the scale to 613.5mm! By this he likes to demonstrate that 630mm is a very reasonable scale and should be strongly considered by anybody thinking of a short scale guitar. It is unbelievable easy to play for this reason. This is a fine concert quality instrument, from one of the world's most recognized builders, built to the highest standards and with a beautiful voice, all complimented by the surreally easy action/comfortable 630mm scale, and enhanced even further by the very effective well elevated fingerboard. You just simply can not get a classical guitar to play any easier than this.
